Defensible Ballistics

Ballistic Energy Estimation Tool

Create a clean ballistic report with estimated temporary cavity volume and energy transfer based on fracture and wound path measurements in ballistic gel. V1.0 (beta)

Instructions

This tool allows you to create a ballistic report with energy estimation based on fracture measurements in ballistic gel.

Measure the following in your ballistic gel block:

  1. Total Wound Path Length (L): The full length of the projectile path
  2. Cavity Start Point (d): Depth where cavity and radial fractures begin
  3. Cavity Length (c): Length over which cavity and fractures continue
  4. Maximum Cavity Width (w): Widest point of cavity and radial fractures

Note: If the wound does not have a cavity, enter 0 for cavity width and cavity length. Volume will then be cylindrical based on projectile width.

Ballistic Chart with Energy Estimation

Energy Estimation Formula

Volume (V) = cylinder for non-cavity regions + frustum-sum for cavity (if present)

Energy (E) = 3 × Volume

The chart illustrates penetration depth as a percentage of block length. Energy transfer is shown alongside each test result.
